Thinking about Elinor

I never had a chance to meet Elinor.
Her son is my neighbor and he said that he knows that his mother would like for me to have her art supplies, so he gave me boxes and boxes filled with 'stuff'. It was very overwhelming, as he was emotional.. and I was too. I thanked him, cooked him a soup and baked him a chocolate cake. I also told him that I would take good care of his mother's things.
I spent the afternoon getting to know Elinor through her choices of art books, looking at the amazing supply of thick, white watercolor paper, touching her brushes... I was even lucky enough to receive several of her paintings.
It made me sad. It also made me look around my own art room, my books and supplies and wonder who will be thinking about me one day. I sat to my journal and painted this lady. For some reason I think she looks better when she's upside down. Don't you?

  1. The lady is lovely - I think it is your feelings that are upside down. What a wonderful gift and how emotional you must feel. Elinor, an artist herself, would want you to use those supplies to make art - of that I'm pretty sure.

  2. Well, I don't know about that, but when it looks good upside down, that means you got it all right. That means all the proportions and features are just perfect. And it is and they are.
I like that your gift of Elinor from her son makes you think of your future gift and to whom.

  3. She looks good anyway you look at her.
I adore the luscious colors you used.
I am wondering the same about what my art and art supplies tell about me.
What a wonderful gift you were given.

  4. She's lovely! What an incredible gift your neighbor gave you.

I came across a huge box of art papers at a thrift store earlier this year, and I haven't had the nerve to use many of the papers yet. It is rather intimidating to receive someone else's well-loved art supplies, I think.

I'm sure you'll continue to create wonderful things with Elinor's supplies. I'll bet she's smiling down on you and her son!

  6. Love the painting - rightside up or upside down!
And how beautiful that Elinor's son gave you his mother's art treasures. They couldn't have gone to a nicer - and more appreciative lady. You will always feel a connection to Elinor as you create now - and that is a beautiful gift in itself.

  8. It's just lovely either way you look at it. What a nice tribute. You never know what is going to spark something in your day...now you have me thinking about my supplies. I am the only family member into art...I need to think this one out.

  9. I love that her son wanted to give his mothers thing to someone who would appreciate and treasure them...and you will. It started me thinking of my stuff in my art room and who I would love to have them....hopefully not for a long time.

  10. What a lovley post and I love the painting "Thinking of Elinor'. Quite emotionalfor her son, but sol lovely that he has found someone who will appreciated his mums love of art and paint...so lovely it is you too Zorana. they must be very special. I will make sure my boys know to send my stuff to my arty friends or down to the local art group. Does make you stop and think what would happen to all of our art goodies.

Beautiful thought provoking post and I do love your painting (both ways).
